Turn your tree into a treasure

Some trees are simply too beautiful to become firewood! If you’ve got a fallen or removed log with good, solid timber in it, our portable milling service turns it into usable slabs for furniture, benchtops, or whatever project you’ve got in mind.

Portable Milling

For a lot of clients, this is about more than the timber – it’s the tree your grandmother planted, or the tree in the backyard that shaded the kids while they played in summer. We’ve seen our milled timber turned into stunning dining tables, chopping boards and benchtops – a proper second life for a tree that’s served its purpose.

What our clients say

“Very impressed with his knowledge of trees and tree climbing skills. Also very happy with the milling work they also did — so pleased a 100+ year old tree trunk will be turned into some stunning furniture or kitchen bench tops — saved from being chopped into firewood. The added bonus of having the trimmed branches turned into beautiful mulch for the garden was the icing on the cake.”

    FAQs

    How our milling arrangement works
We mill on-site and as-is with no transport costs, minimal environmental impact, just a bit of sawdust left behind that can go straight onto the garden. Milling is free in exchange for a share of the timber, or we can arrange payment or an hourly rate if you’d rather keep the whole log – either way, a good way to recoup value from timber that would otherwise go to waste.
    Wood that can be milled
It’s more about the log than the species, a decent-sized, straight stem is what counts, and most natives, exotics, hardwoods and softwoods can all mill well (oak, cedar, ash, walnut, redwood and copper beech are favourites). Not sure? Send us a photo and we’ll let you know.
    Does portable milling cost anything?
Our standard arrangement is milling free of charge in exchange for roughly half the milled slabs — a good way to recoup value from a log that would otherwise be firewood or waste. We can also arrange payment for the log or an hourly milling rate if you’d prefer to keep all the timber yourself.
What types of trees are worth milling?
Some of our favourites to mill are – oak, cedar, ash, walnut, redwood and copper beech among others. If you’re not sure whether your log is worth milling, send us a photo and we’ll give you an honest answer.
Can you mill a tree with sentimental value?
Absolutely — this is one of our favourite parts of the job. Whether it’s a tree planted by a family member or one that’s simply reached the end of its life, milling gives it a second life as furniture, a benchtop or a keepsake, rather than firewood.
